Who remembers this picture? The Woodland Goddess!

Retro/Vintage art. 54254984-2006047143032061-5627175471574679552-n

If you grew up in the UK in the 1960's chances are you knew someone who had this hanging in their living room! Kitschy? Maybe, but they were considered the height of trendiness back then! I found this one in my father in law's loft after he died last year. My wife says it adorned the living room wall when she was a child.

They must have sold in their thousands. There were several variations, mostly painted by J H Lynch in the early 60's.

If your tastes were a bit more exotic there were always the Tretchikoff ones...

Discovering the 'Woodland Goddess' up the loft was quite a nostalgia rush and despite what the kids say, it's getting hung in the dining room!

I remember these, they were still around in the 70's

Didn't some people believe some of these pictures were cursed with bad luck?

When I was a lad the "Girl with a Green Face" as she was commonly known was regarded as the height of kitsch .....now they sell for a fortune on eBay if you can find one.
There were several different versions.

I managed to score one in perfect condition when I saw a bloke walking out of a car-boot market clutching a framed specimen.
Asked him about it and discovered he only wanted the frame and right there he opened it up and GAVE me the mounted picture!
BINGO!

That is so awesome! I always thought, when I was a kid, that someday I would grow up to be rich and sophisticated and that I'd live in a house like that.

Instead, I'm a (late) middle-aged guy playing with GI Joe dolls in a cheap wooden storage barn.

I was not familiar with the Woodland Goddess image specifically, but I remember that style of image; and now I want one to hang... on the wall in my cheap wooden storage barn (because the wife would never approve of it going anywhere else). I see that modern reprints are available. I wonder if the printing quality of the modern issue is on par with the older original versions?

Wow !! That looks amazing in that setting !! Very Happy

Sadly, we never had a 'Woodland Goddess' in our house  Sad

We did have this little bugger though, copies of which became infamous as somehow emerging nearly unscathed from burnt down houses.. according to the Sun.. Neutral  Wink

Dave, .....Dave!!!
PLEASE!
NOT the "D" word!  No  No  No

As for the "Woodland Goddess", was I the only person amazed that apparently there were hairdressing salons, full makeup studios and waxing parlours somewhere out in the woods? Question  Question  Question She's a fairly solid girl compared to today's beanpoles too.

I hated that little crying bugger...a whole series of urban myths grew up around that overly sentimental picture.

Better be careful if you do happen to own a print of "The Crying Boy".
According to the legend, it's supposed to cause your house to burn down!
Seems the kid had something of a troubled life.

https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/crying-boy-painting-fires

Best get rid of the damned thing I reckon!
Wouldn't want my Men to burn!

Perhaps it's best to stick with the "Woodland Goddess".
According to the previous posts here she only causes marital disputes! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Do you see what you guys started? Rolling Eyes

Retro/Vintage art. May26

The guys assumed "iconic kitsch" is fancy high-brow talk for "famous work of art," so they concluded that this... piece... merits prominent display.

Just think, that perfectly shaped tree has been waiting in your back garden for decades for this perfect moment!
Razz

That is so brilliant! You even matched the drape of the fabric!

Too freakin' funny!
