I dug out this modern "Adventures of" Joe, the set called Challenge at Hawk River, for a motor pool topic on another forum.
I decided while I had him out, I would take a couple of photos of the original set.
Twenty years ago Hasbro came out with the Adventures of series with the Classic Collection, loosely based on vintage sets.
For a while you could get this set for a song, lots of them on ebay for about $15 USD, even though they were not on shelves anymore. I guess it was not one of the more popular ones among children. I don't know.
Anyway, this figure came with an orange raft and oar, a hand held spotlight and a rifle that fires a grappling hook.
And with the name, a hawk. It barely fits on Joe's arm.
Scanning the back of the box, I guess it didn't lay flat, the edges of the comic are a bit soft.
Anyway, I hope somebody likes it. If not, tell me, I will not post and bother anyone with any more of these.

Thank you Daryl for sharing your take on the modern "Adventures of" Joe, set Challenge at Hawk River. I am really loving the modern Joe head sculpt. He looks ready for action in any river. Really loving the picture of him holding a hawk on his arm.

I love seeing the vintage comic books and package art! Really takes me back to the Adventure Team days!
I was not familiar with this series of releases, but they certainly captured the look and storytelling style of the older AT comics.
It’s amusing how they conveniently skip over the specifics of how the adventurer retrieved the treasure from the coils of the enormous rattlesnake! I guess that’s where the imagination of childhood is supposed to kick in!
Great head sculpt and flock on the figure.

Thanks Alexander! I was glad the hawk stayed on his arm long enough for a photo. I thought it would stay better than it did.

I'm glad you liked it Dave! These figures were on the market about twenty years ago, around 2000.
And I agree, the part about the snake seems a bit odd, especially when he mentions "doing his fingers right." And then the obstacle is instantly removed a frame later. And I don't know what the snake and the treasure have to do with the story, as there is no treasure included in the kit.
But then, other sets have mentioned the Black Dragon Gang. It's a shame that Hasbro didn't make them. I think they could have been cool bad guy figures.

I've always loved this figure! Thanks for posting all the pics and info about the set, Daryl!
I got one when it was first released and still have him. I think this set had great play value and it was one of the first figures with the new flocked head sculpt with goat-tee. Definitely a keeper that screams adventure!
I always wondered why they didn't make it an "Adventure Team" set(?)
and yes, the comic seems to have some holes... I guess we're supposed to fill them in ourselves(?)

The figures I have, three are dated 2000 and are all called "Adventures of." Besides Challenge at Hawk River, I have Rescue the Pygmy Gorilla and Save the Tiger. I have two of the Pygmy Gorilla, the caucasion version I changed to a black suit, and he is my Modern AT Commander. The AA version is still original, but I added an olive drab t-shirt because those figures came shirtless.
In 2001, Hasbro started calling the sets the Adventure Team. The Adventures of had the comics on the back of the box. The Adventure team sets have a backstory instead. The Adventure Team sets I have are Search for the Yeti, Secret of the Mummy's Tomb and Secret of the Savage Swamp. I two of the Savage Swamp, one is the female. They also made Danger of the Depths, but I don't have that one. I think the Planet Xenome set is also AT, I'm not finding that set at the moment.
I copied Sean Huxter in putting a t-shirt on the pygmy gorilla figure, and got a brown t-shirt for the mummy's tomb figure, as he is shirtless except for a vest. He also added socks for the savage swamp figures, I picked some up because the look better with them, but I'm not sure where I put those at the moment along with the brown t-shirt. The mummy and male savage swamp figure are still in the boxes un-opened.

I have that set. Mine has the apparently more sought after BLUE alien. There were three, differing only in the head sculpts, hands and colour. Both the astronaut and the alien are now talking to Robby the Robot. (Thanks again Dave!)

That alien creature fig is excellent. Reminds me of the moon creatures in Melies’ “A Trip to the Moon.”

Nice set LeStryge, I'm not sure where mine is. The blue one seems harder to find than the other two.
I got one set boxed, one loose and found the third alien loose a time later in a figure lot. I'm guessing I have all of them in a box somewhere.

I have been looking for the red alien with those sucker fingertips. Reminds me of the last scene where you see just an arm emerge from the crashed craft in "War of the Worlds"....that's the FIRST one, not that later execrable effort with Tom Cruise. What an abysmal mess that movie was.

Seeing that movie was the first time in my life I stormed out of a theater in a seething range. Oh, I sat through the whole pic, and it just kept getting worse and worse. It was so astonishingly terrible that I did not merely feel disappointed, or annoyed about having wasted my time and money. I found myself genuinely angry that such a project could have been given the green light. That film inspired an intense and continuing contempt for Hollywood, and the so-called "creatives" who churn out big budget drivel.
It's reassuring to finally find someone who recognizes how wretched that Spielberg-Cruise travesty is.
Those alien figs certainly command a healthy price on the secondary market!

That movie was probably only equaled in its sheer ineptitude and mindboggling idiocy by the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with a hapless Keanu Reeves. Rated MA....Mandatory Avoidance!

Alrighty, Adventure Team to the challenge! Good job TN and LeStyrge! I never saw the comic adventure, so I really didn't know what Joe was doing during that trip and it's great to see all three aliens. When they came out I could only afford one of them, so I bought the red one. Turns out I never have been able to get the other two aliens. Whatever.

I'm not familiar with this great set Daryl, I really like the detail and comic map box.
