The lab is entirely scratch built. Started with one of those jewellery boxes we all use, fitted it with shelves at back and found tiny lab equipment to go in them, all filled with various substances. I made the tripod, gauze and bunsen. The brain under the dome came from a 1/6 scale anatomical model I found in a charity shop. Test tubes and rack are bought props. The first shot is a bit of a disappointment for me as I had set up the flask to have accidentally spilled blue liquid onto the floor and the lab cat was busily licking it up. However in my haste I missed getting that bit in the frame! |

Primary school "splatter work". (We actually did this in primary school!) You know, masking tape on the unwanted areas, paint a base coat, let it dry. Then splatter poster paint/gouache paint with an old toothbrush through a piece of wire fly gauze, or even better, use one of those ready-made round gauzed frames you get in kitchen shops (read charity bins) that are used to put over frying oil to prevent splatter. Practice on paper first because the paint has to have just enough water mixed in to make a fine dotted pattern. Too much and it will run through and blob. Two colours gives the terrazzo effect often seen in labs. I used a light blue for the background, then white and a dark blue for the dots. Very easy really. |
