Hey Dan. Just been into my local independent electrical shop and apparently the batteries are easy to come by. They usually have them in stock. It's this battery

Yes, that battery's common.  It was used extensively during the 1970's for bicycle lanterns.

A customer, a Dutch ex-pat, told me that this same battery type was used during WWII.  He had memories of seeing these batteries littering the road after German troops had been through.
