Your're right, It's best to have a big weapon that fires lots of ammo, than a puny one that only fires a tiny trickle

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Water-cooled HMGs like the M1917 Browning or Vickers had the tripod reversed. This also affected how the positions were dug. Here are a few illustrations. Some have the actual measurements; so just divide by 6, and head out to the backyard!
