Definitely less stars!  Another thing to remember is that each regiment had two flags (colors); the National colors and your regimental flag. The former was especially treasured. There are stories galore of color bearers being struck down and replaced before the flag touched the ground. The film "Glory" doesn't cover it,  but the first Medal of Honor (our equivalent to the VC) awarded to an African American went to SGT James Carney, who went back into Battery Wagner to retrieve the National Colors (from the hands of a Confederate soldier to boot).

I have the Sideshow Berdan sharpshooter uniform on a DML fig somewhere. I really need to fix him up for display.
