1978 Saw only one Boxed release and perhaps in my opinion the strangest release by Palitoy The Desert Fighter. This was strange for a number of reasons. Firstly it was marketed as "A Member of the Action Man Team" which up until now meant that he was to be a different figure altogether as with Atomic Man, Tom Stone and Bullet Man but instead we find just an ordinary Action Man figure? Even stranger was that by now we had been given the Eagle Eyed figure i mean it was now 1978 but instead they used the fixed eyed head? People have over the years speculated that this was originally designed to be another different style figure to coincide with the rest of the "Members of the Action Man Team" but was dropped at the last minute. The box also depicts a very different drawing style that mimics the rest of the releases from the "Member of Action Team" Members. A very very strange but to me the most interesting release and one that is not discussed that often or even noticed by most collectors. Incidentally it was the last ever boxed figure to be released with a Hybrid Body and Dress Cup. Hows that for what's considered amongst collectors as the most boring Action Man release ever?

I've often wondered if getting away with producing a figure with as little kit as this gave Palitoy the confidence to later issue the nude 'Basic Figure' boxed VAM. Rolling Eyes

I do like the artwork on the box. I must say I would be very tempted with this as I'd love to have a collection of all Action Man Team Members. I like the idea that it was intended to be a completely different style of figure like Tom Stone.

Just to say Danny, these posts are making me extremely tempted to sell some of my loose figures and get more boxes Wink
