This GI Joe "crewcut" series was released circa 2004 by Dreams and Visions, licensed from Hasbro. These were based on the painted head Joes but were sculpted with a crewcut hairstyle. They were available in the same four hair colours as the original Joes, but with a limited number of white haired figures randomly scattered across the range.
There were four sets released for general sale and like the original painted head series these were across the four services:
Action Soldier - US Army Tank Crewman
Action Sailor - US Navy Ordinance
Action Marine - USMC Raider
Action Pilot - Air Police
The sets were presented in vintage style "window box" packaging.
However, there was also a rarer fifth set released, an Action Sailor 'Top Gun' set which contained a figure dressed in US Navy dress whites, as well as an extra uniform consisting of a flight suit, boots and a pilot's helmet. This came in the same Action Sailor window box packaging, but also had a unique outer cardboard slipcover. This was a convention only set and was limited to a run of only 400 sets, hence its rarity.
I picked up this set about eight years ago, but had never got round to opening it until last week. I had been waiting to try and obtain a naked crewcut figure on which to display the pilot's uniform and even though I managed to find two in the interim, I never got round to opening the set until now...
The Top Gun pilot...
Unfortunately that rather splendid looking helmet is for display in this manner only, as it is too small to fit any GI Joe or Action Man head.
But the real showpiece of this set is the splendid Dress white "Officer and A Gentleman" uniform...
A beautifully detailed uniform...
On display with the rest of the crewcut range; pilot (USAF Air Police), soldier (US Army Tank Crewman). marine (US Marine Corps Raider) and sailor US Navy Ordinance) ...
In case you're wondering where my other spare crewcut guy ended up, I used him for this Soviet Army Officer. The crewcut just looked so right for him...
