Birthday Joe find

This past May we visited the in-laws in Texas. On my birthday as part of my gift we spent much of the morning and early afternoon antiquing. We hit a huge antique mall with all sorts of toys, but very little Joe. In the middle of the last stall in the far corner of the mall, was this fellow.




He was dressed in a KO uniform with a Marx hat and two left ski boots


Being that he's a PH Action Soldier, I wanted to get him back in fighting trim. Here he is in a Cotswold/Gearbox uniform as a member of a local Infantry division in WWII. The other GI is the mock-up based on a Dragon figure.




I put the KO uniform to good use, as well!

To safeguard the feet, I gave him a pair of 40th boots:


And Action Man helmet that Dal sent keeps the vintage look more than the Cot's version; but looks just as nice!

Good find! The Knock Off uniform looks very well made   

I decided to update/backdate the Action Soldier. I have an Action Man uniform that is close in color to the mustard wool uniforms that most GIs in the ETO wore. This particular shade was dubbed by GI and future novelist Kurt Vonnegut as "dogshit brown". The uniform change also allowed me to take a pic of his torso. He's one of the red swirl Joes that were made in '65-66.





The color is a good approximation, but the Action Man "Ike" battledress jacket collar is fairly high. Almost looks like a leisure suit collar!


To offset this, I've given him a scarf. It's a modern piece; believe it's Soldier Story.



I might acquire a vintage or 40th Field Jacket for a slightly better fit; but I'm happy with him for the time being.

Now he looks as a typical GI 70 years ago would.

I've never known about the 'Red swirl Joes' before, it's new to me.. thanks for the info. I'll be checking my Joes later, I'm sure I have one that has a reddish sun burnt torso
