C: Yes I have. You have an extensive combat record spanning the globe in a short amount of time. You're a specialist in more fields than I have fingers.
S: Thank you for the kind words sir.
C: No need to thank me, it's all true. Which brings me to the reason for the call.
S: Yes sir?
C: I'd like to have you in the Special Operations Division of the Task Force.
S: You mean, the...
C: Yes Sean, the Black Beret Battalion, as it is affectionately known. I think you've got what it takes.
S: Don't Black Beret Operators have an intense training period of 33 weeks?
C: They do, but you have been bounced around so much in the past while, you have enough experience in most of the required fields that we can just let you in, after a test mission.
S: What's the mission sir?
C: I can't give you any details unless you agree.
S: Where do I report?
C: The Depot at Achnacarry, in two days.
S: I can be there sir.
C: Report to the Quartermaster first, and get outfitted and equipped, then to the intelligence office for your assignment, they'll tell you what to do from there.
S: Yes sir. Anything else?
C: Nope that's everything. Good luck Stevens.

| At the Special Operations Depot at Achnacarry.... Sean: I'm Sean Stevens. Quartermaster: Ah yes, the FNG. I'm the Quartermaster here. S: Do I call you "Q" then? Q: You know it's not as funny as most people think. S: Right, sorry.  Q: Anyway, for your test mission you're going to be given some gear, starting with these trousers. Insulated of course, sporting the U.S.'s M1942 Frogspot Beach Camouflage. Non-reversible. S: Very nice.  Q: Here's your jacket, also insulated... S: Looks like a... Q: ...based on the Design of the American Paratrooper's Jacket in WWII. She's got lots of pockets. We've just reinforced it some more, and insulated it to keep the wearer warmer.  Q: You're also assigned this web belt, with a Yank water bottle and sidearm. S: What's my main weapon? Q: Your Sten.  Q: Right, this parachute pack you'll be needing, and this bag, filled with your other equipment. Sleeping bag, rain cape Binocs, radio. S: That everything? Q: Yep. Get changed before you go to receive your mission. S: Right here? Q: Aye, hop to it. Moments later... Q: Right, the intelligence building is that one right there. They'll set you up for your mission. Good luck lad. S: Thank you.

This mission is inspired by Fightin' Irish's brilliant "Greek Island" mission*, which, in turn, was inspired by me. Funny how that works. * Preparing for a new mission, and Mission: Greek Island.

MD: Alright,

MD: My records show that most recently, you were attached to a Heavy Weapons Company in the Task Force, correct?
SS: Yes sir.
MD: Stationed in Undevia?
SS: Yes sir.
MD: You're going back.
*Pause*
SS: Pardon, sir?
MD: Do you recall, at the Eastern Edge of the Ergens Forrest, a mountain?
SS: Yes.
MD: Intelligence indicates that there is a large Undevian Nationalist Base Camp set up on the mountain, perhaps in it if there's a cave system.
SS: Like the R.A.N.S. ratholes in Bang Sathanthi?
MD: Precisely. Your mission, is to investigate the mountain, and find out if there is indeed an enemy camp there. If there is, study it. Take pictures with this. I had the Quartermaster not give it to you so I could.
SS: Nice camera.
MD: It'll take stills and video. Just gotta flip that switch.
*click*
SS: Like that?
MD: Like that.
SS: When do I leave?
MD: You'll be flown to Fort Brechin tomorrow morning with another division of Blue Berets. No one can know that we're sending a Black Beret Operator in. You'll stay there until the next new moon, where you can be dropped in under the cover of darkness. Hopefully the weather holds.
SS: Anything else?
MD: Yes, we have a strict 48 hour contact policy. If you've not made contact in 48 hours since your last contact, we'll consider you dead and move on with our lives.
SS: The price of earning a Black Beret?
MD: Do you know why, we wear the Black Berets?
SS: No.
MD: Back in 1953, when that nasty business in Algun Lado was happening, Uncle Sam asked for help from the U.K. I don't know why, they're closer, and were equipped and manned enough to handle it. But their business is their business. So the U.K. sent a Brigade of Blue Berets down there. By early 1954, the Brigade had suffered 73% casualties, but the Nationalists there were limited to a number that was at least three times that of the Brigade's. In a daring sneak attack, the Brigade went in at night, and eliminated the remaining Nationalist forces. They wore all black, and had dyed their Berets to match. When the Brigade came back to the U.K., they refused to get new blue berets, and continued to wear the black ones out of respect for their fallen brothers. The superior officers were so inspired, that the Black Beret-clad soldiers became their own unit.
SS: That's grimly inspiring.
MD: We don't tell it to everyone.
*pause*
MD: You should probably go get something to eat. I've heard they're serving Shepherd's Pie tonight.
SS: Thank you sir.
*Sean get up to leave, opens the door*
SS: One question sir,
MD: Yes?
SS: The Name of the Mountain?
MD: Dragon Mountain.
SS: Thank you sir.

| While on his walk, Sean sneaks into the Base Quartermaster, and scrounges a first aid kit, and a trench knife, both for his upcoming mission.
On his way out, he is stopped by MPs. He keeps his cool demeanor, on the outside. Inside, he's panicking.
MP 1: Sean Stevens?
Sean: Yes.
MP 1: Commander Wisdom would like a word with you about your upcoming assignment.
MP 2: Meet him in his office at 18:30.
Sean: I'll be there.
The MP's walk off to other duties, and Sean breaths out a sigh of relief. | |

| Wow I'm really really enjoying reading this story. When Major Dalton said "strict 48 hour contact policy. If you've not made contact in 48 hours since your last contact, we'll consider you dead and move on with our lives" well I just really hope Sean completes the investigative mission on Dragon Mountain in the 48 hours time or less, guess we'll find out or not. I'm really liking the pictures of Sean out and about, keep this story coming AY please.

| A knock at the door, Commander Wisdom glances up from his piles of paperwork.
"Come in." He says sternly.
Sean Stevens pokes his head in. "You wanted to see me?"
"Yes I did," Wisdom replies, "come in and hurry, I don't have a lot of time to explain it."
Sean comes in, and stands in front of Wisdom's desk.
"Have a seat, and pay attention." Wisdom barks. Continuing, "I know they told you a little bit up in Achnacarry, but here's the more in-depth explanation. On the 26th, a new moon is forecast, and it'll be a cloudy night. You'll take off from here in one of our new Black Stealth Jets at 23:00, and make the jump at approximately 23:20 when you're at the base of Dragon Mountain.
As soon as you land, bury your chute, and start to make your way up the mountain. Be on the lookout for enemy presence, and gather as much intel as you can on what's on or in that mountain. Before you jump, the Base Cooks will cram your bag full of rations, use them as emergency only, you'll have to hunt and cook your own food otherwise.
Did they tell you about their 48 hour rule?"
Sean, taking it all in, replies "Yes sir."
"Well, it's 48 hours since your last contact. As soon as you radio something in, your 48 hours starts over. Understand?"
"Yes sir."
"Good, now get out of my office I've got work to do." | |
