What Laurel and Hardy are wearing or supposed to be wearing at any rate, are a red Foreign Legion kepis with a white cover with neck cloth built in, called a "Havelock," because it was actually a British invention first used by British troops in India in the 1840's and 50's. They were actually issued to US troops on both sides of the Civil War in the early days but were heartily disliked and usually turned into something the troops found more useful like coffee filters.
By WWII, the the French had gotten rid of the soft kepi and introduced a stiff one still worn today. The Foreign Legion had them issued in white and remain the only units in the French Army to have white kepis for dress hats, though other formations have them in other colours, depending on the arm and regiment.
This being said, John Wayne is just wearing a long-billed fishing cap with a handkerchief attached to the back.

But kind of drifting way off-topic, as always.

That's one of the things that makes this forum a lot more fun than most of the others!
Unfortunately, long-billed fishing caps have fallen out of favor these days. Long-billed fishing caps with squared bills are very challenging to find. Long-billed fishing caps with squared patent leather bills, like the Hatari hat, are virtually impossible to find. If you want one that is either "sized" or has elastic or a cloth adjustment strap, forget about it!
But unlike the Hatari cap, the bill is not fully squared at the front, and it has a plastic adjustment band in the back. The Hatari cap has a lower profile rounded crown, contrasted with the taller, boxier crown of post-1960s caps, and hemmed ventilation holes rather than metal grommets.

Why would so many people claim to be searching for a Havelock, when it has to be the very easiest to make? Even I with my limited sewing skills could run one of those up in a few minutes.
I'm currently sitting at my machine trying to make a set of surgical scrubs and mask for Dr. Evil. Isn't anywhere near as easy as it sounds, I can tell you!

Fantastic jeep and very ambitious paint scheme. Looks like it's coming along very well! But, I worry about fall-out from General MacCuster... Did you get his prior approval?
Beautiful work Dave looking forward to see it in the Desert Southwest with Gwendolyn Shilling-Tuppence at the wheel.
And, I really hope there are no Rhino's around...

I managed to break the trailer hitch hook... by inadvertently backing the Jeep off my kitchen table.
I suppose I am fortunate in that the only thing that broke, or that I have yet discovered, was the plastic trailer hook.
My efforts to repair the plastic hook using epoxy cement have failed. I discovered that replacement hooks made from metal are available, so I have placed an order for one. As with everything in the 1/6 scale hobby, the little piece will be shipping from China, so who knows if or when it will arrive.
