Breath in the air from 1983... Just arrived ...box has a scrape on the front but otherwise in great shape... But the figure is the most minty I’ve ever seen, his body and head are factory fresh.. His clothes were still sealed in the bag with original tape on it .... looks like he came of the assembly line yesterday... was almost reluctant to take them out of the bag , but couldn’t resist.. Very pleased ..

What a find!
I'm sure the soldier is happy to finally be in uniform after nearly forty years!
But yeah... opening a factory sealed bag... I don't know if I could have done it, myself!

I must admit I thought long and hard about leaving the bag sealed ... but to be the first ( big) kid to get his hands on the uniform could not be resisted

I know that this is going to sound like heresy to some people, but toys were meant to be played with, not sealed in plastic bags. Just like people, kittens and puppies, they need someone to love them.

But... who would want a choo-choo with square wheels on its caboose? Or a cowboy who rides an ostrich?

Well, it seems that by the end of the story, Rudolf and Santa find homes for all of them. And I'd love a cowboy that rides an ostrich. And BTW, THAT is my FAVORITE XMAS special. It's all about the challenges faced by misfits

So they sold them....decapitated? That does seem a bit macabre for what was supposed to be a kid's toy.

Decapitated? What the devil are you talking about? There are no decapitations in "Rudolf," though there is a bit of tooth pulling.

I was referring to the original photos above from Rustygun that seem to show, ...(well to my eye anyway) that the figure was originally packaged for sale with the head detached.

It was just the normal plastic tie that holds the head on was perished ...quick fix Unless it was a last ditch advertising ploy by Palitoy .... I can see it now... “ action man has had his head blown of by an IED...hours of fun can be had trying to attach his head and save his life..” .. for extra fun pull one of his legs off and throw it on your shed roof ...

Totally agree... I know it’s probably a good idea to keep things sealed and not played with ( for future rewards ) but I have action men because I love them.... and I don’t care about how much money I’m going to make on them.. Anyway when I die my wife will probably sell them all for about £80 for the lot and think she’s got a bargain..

You only have to look on eBay to see heaps of Star Wars stuff that has been kept pristine in the packaging and now is up for sale. In most cases, unless the item is exceptionally rare, the price is less than it would have cost new. Of course there are some listing astronomical prices but if you watch they are taken down a few days later with no sale recorded.
I don't think many people are making their millions out of this process. AND they have not had the fun of playing with the thing itself for so many years.
However, there is the bizarre( to me) process now of "re-packaging".

Prices for "collectibles" be they toys, antiques, paintings etc fluctuate along with whatever the current demand for them is and current economic conditions. IMO however, toys are toys and are meant to be played with, their only real value is in the love that they get from their owners. Sure, i would love to have a vintage GI Joe space capsule like I had when I was a kid, or some Billy Blastoff's or Major Matt Mason figures, but I'm not gonna pay an arm and a leg for them, especially if all I can do with them is put them on display someplace and never actually use them.
