Is there a marker of some kind in the top of the pylon? Do hill walkers keep a checklist of hills and mountains they have visited or successfully summited?

If so, has your hill walking Action Man started a list of his own?

This is an “Ordinance Survey benchmark” Dave. During the Napolionic War in the late 1700s, Britain decided they needed accurate maps of the coast line of the country. By 1850 the mapping had stretched inland, so all mountains in Scotland have one of these at the top. (There were originally all over the place in the valleys as well, but they’ve now been lost/removed/etc). So to answer your question, each benchmark is about 3ft high, has a unique number on a side plate and a brass screw thread on the top. A thing all a theodolite screwed into the top and the could measure the angles and inclination between other benchmarks to better than a 1/10 of a degree. When GPS and laser measurements came along they were able to check the old maps and discovered they were accurate to 3ft over the the 700mile length of the country. The bench marks in Scotland are now protected as being of historic interest, although some still call them ugly lumps of concrete.

There are people who keep a list of all the mountains that they’ve climbed in Scotland. We call all mountains in Scotland of 3000ft Munros. There are currently 282 of them. Some of these are a causal walk to top, some require a long walk in or a rope protected climb. All can be dome in one day. My friend Ivan who I walk with has done them all twice, then stopped counting. This is quite rare. About 6000 people has registered with doing them all once. I suspect less than 100 have done them all twice.
