Information from my dad who looked up the origins of the “font stone”
Although the object in the picture is described as a font on the map, and some people put money in it, it is in fact the base of an ancient cross. According to archaeologists it originates from the dark ages and early Christian era in Scotland, 476AD to 900AD. (archaeologists now call this the early medieval period, but I think the older term “dark ages” sounds so much better). The path we were on was formerly known as the Monks’ Road. In 1808 it’s recorded that a fallen part of the cross was found at the foot of the hill, but has been lost since.
On the day the photos were taken the sky was blue and there was bright sunshine, but it was well below zero. In some of the pictures you can see thick mist in the valleys below us. It was one of those days that it was good to be alive, as long as you’re in warm clothing.
