Love the custom work on the Horse . is his Gas mask leather ?
Hello Chip yes the mask is made from leather, I used that as a material I like to work with as it can be formed, I make quite a bit of kit using leather including the saddles and bridle
Would you be kind enough to P.M some tips how you work with it ? I get the impression you have to pre make the holes before you sew it ?
No problem Chip I start by making a template of the head by taping felt to the head, then I cover this completely in a skin of tape, I then cut the tape from throat to chinand remove it from the felt I then open out the taped shape and I make cuts in prefered places so the tape template will lay flat, on an intricate piece like this mask I needed to cut the tape template into the pieces, I then transfer the shapes to card, and mark where the pieces will connect, I then mark the leather and cut the three pieces out, the next stage is make holes in the leather where each piece stitches to the next (make sure the holes line up with the holes on its jointing piece) I then sew the pieces together, once sewn together I soak the leather mask and place it on the horses head, I then cover the mask in thin felt or clothe and bind this tightly on using electricians tape so the leather is kept tightly on the horses face, I then put the horse in the airing cupboard near the hot water tank (Not too near as the horse could get damaged, leave it in there for 2 days but after the first day start to remove sone of the electrical tape to allow the drying to occur, after 2 days remove the tape and felt, at this stage the leather hasnt dried fullyso gives you a chance to make sure that everything is lined up correctly, you can then put strips of felt and a couple of pieces of electric tape to hold everything in place until it's fully dried, I then trim anything that needs tidying and then I dye the leather and buff then I then burnish the leather edges to seal and finish the mask edges then cut and make the lense and straps for bridle sorry this is a bit long winded but I've tried to condense a lot of work in this hopefully it's helpful Thanks for your interest Ian

I use leather hole punches you can buy specific hole sizes in the pink pair or the universal metal revolving punch with a few different sizes, I used the small pink that is approx 1.5mm

Thanks, Daryl the gasmask went well I'm pleased with it This figures head has a hole in the mouth corner to take a cigarette or pipe or cigar the cigarette is easy to make as is the cigar all you need is a small piece of a wooden cocktail stick paint it white or brown then using a lighter set the end alight and blow it out leaving an ember just glowing on the end, wet your fingers then gently put out the ember this then leaves the end of the cigarette looking like it has ash on the end, then on the other end using a sharp knife feather the tip enough for it to fit in the hole in your figures mouth it's pretty straight forward just mind you don't burn your fingers

Wow, is this the first Action Man custom to use actual bullets as a component? Well done, very intimidating.
