Marx Buddy Charlies

Hawkeye’s jeep post inspired me to get my Marx guys out while rearranging and organizing my collection. Officially the “All American Fighter”, the Chicago-based Montgomery Ward department store chain named them Buddy Charlie (as Hasbro had given GI Joe a name), and most collectors still use this to describe the line. Unlike Stony Smith, Buddy Charlie had removable cloth uniforms and boots, but retained Stony’s more crude (but tougher) green plastic weapons and gear. The Marx gripping hands are even more fragile than Hasbro/Palitoy ones, so these figures have either Playing Mantis Captain Action or Ideal Knight of Darkness arms and hands. (Same person designed both the Buddy Charlie and Captain Action bodies).



This Buddy Charlie soldier wears accurate Marx uniform and Field Jacket. Black “gloves” are Knight of Darkness. Webbing and boots are Hasbro.

This Buddy Charlie wears the Ideal Captain Action Nick Fury camo uniform (pretty much a Gi Joe or action man flight suit but in marine camo). The Grease Gun is the Stony Smith version.

Nice Nate! I have one Buddy Charlie somewhere in a box with 2 or 3 Stony's. I need to dig for them.

Great looking figures Nate, and nicely kitted out too. I have always liked their faces, so full of character.
