Wow!  It was a century ago.  Western Canadians went over in numbers highly disproportionate to our population.  Canadians held the Ypres Salient and their sacrifice inspired McCrae's poem:

The Guns of August, 1914 Letter-on-paper

When I was in Flanders in 1987 I visited my grand-uncle's grave at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.  I was impressed how the Belgians have honoured the memory of fallen Canadians.

Indeed! I think the lights go out tonight at 10pm in remembrance?

PostSubject: 4 Aug. 1914 - Commence Hostilities!   The Guns of August, 1914 Icon_minitimeTue Aug 05, 2014 6:12 am

Thanks for your kind comments, gentlemen!  I think the "lights out" tonight is a fitting commemoration.

Here's another little scene for you ... another member of Cabinet in 1914 who felt more upbeat than Grey!

The Guns of August, 1914 14646865047_396c3e93dd_z4 August 1914 - The Admiralty by DOM12inch, on Flickr

"Signal all ships - commence hostilities with Germany!"

... And while we're at it, on the subject of nautical things and wars beginning ...
Exactly halfway between the Great War and our own day, another tragic conflict was brewing up ...

4 August 1964 - USS Maddox - Gulf of Tonkin

The Guns of August, 1914 14852834163_6561868d83_z4 August 1964 - USS Maddox, Gulf of Tonkin by DOM12inch, on Flickr

"Sir!  Sonar reports multiple torpedoes!  But ... well, Sir, there's a lot of interference, and ... well, we just aren't sure ..."

Thanks very much for your generous comments, gentlemen!  I really had fun with these last night.  I wanted to do both these scenes on the date, August 4, but I almost ran out of time and had to scramble to finish just before the clock struck 12.  :-)  Burning the midnight oil, as it were ... NAVAL oil, in this case, heheh.

BTW, I'm sorry I probably chose the wrong thread to post these, since none of these figures is Action Man, although the RN officer's uniform is from MAM James Bond.  I just figured the "Random" heading would grant some latitude.
 Arrow
Heheh, I just HAD to try this emoticon ... what on Earth would it mean?  Well, as it seems to be circling the equator of that little yellow globe, it must refer to LATITUDE!   Razz

OMG WOW dom34 your little scenes you have put together are just incredible, most of all the
4 August 1964 - USS Maddox - Gulf of Tonkin scene just looks so real because of the background and the red lighting glow you have used Wink
