As you know, Bludd is currently at BAM-HQ, it looks as if the AT chap stole them from his backpack just after Jake signed his transfer papers!

We read the novel in a high school literature class, and then they showed us the film.

We read the play "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial," in 10th grade.

Apparently "The Caine Mutiny" was "trending" in educational circles when we were in school.

One of Bogart's very finest performances, as well as one of his last. He was already beginning to suffer some of the symptoms of the cancer that killed him a couple of years later. The film's only real flaw is that Bogart and all the other actors were at the time, much older than the characters they were portraying. The courtroom scene with the ball bearings is one of the best-known in movie history... and one which Bogart will forever own.

The film is also interesting in that, as in Double Indemnity, Fred MacMurray portrays "the heavy," an underhanded manipulator who uses, and sacrifices, other people to further his own ends. Later he became known for gently comic roles, portraying The Absent-Minded Professor for Disney and the affable father on "My Three Sons" on television. MacMurray is rarely mentioned in discussions of "great actors" from the Golden Age of Hollywood, but I have long felt that he should receive more recognition and respect for the variety of roles and character types he was able to not just take on, but to perform masterfully.

He plays the real villain of the film, yet doesn't look like one. Unlike the book or the play, the film underplays Greenwald's distaste for the whole court-martial, because as a Jew, he sees the war in someone more personal terms than the other characters. He suspects that Queeg is suffering from what we would today call PTSD from his two previous years in the Atlantic, but to defend his client, he has to destroy Queeg and his career in the trial.
While in university, I discussed the film with a classmate who was a reserve naval officer who'd spent 18 months at sea on a destroyer and when talking about the typhoon scene where Queeg freezes on the bridge, he felt that relieving the Captain would have been the correct thing to do.
The problem is that the Navy would take a dim view of this, being hard for it to believe that a career naval officer could freeze up like that, which brings us to Queeg's PTSD or battle fatigue as it was then known, and trying to prove it without having the proper medical training.
My high school English teacher argued that Queeg was supposed to be a little man...a nothing...a cog in a machine, at least in the play, though Bogart's on screen presence was so huge that this perhaps does not come through in the film.
