It's been a LONG time since I've heard the word "Grok."
I've been a fan of Heinlein since my high school days. But it's been years since I read that novel. Luckily the library at my high school had several of his novels. But I think my favorites were "Glory Road" and "Starship Troopers."
I think I may have been too young to fully grok "Stranger in a Strange Land" when I read it. I remember key points, his being discovered and his death. The church running state I don't think I really comprehended when I was young. I've heard that he has been considered the inventor of the waterbed because of that novel.
I need to reread it.

"I grok Spock" was a commonly heard expression among fans of TOS during it's original run, especially when NBC was thinking of cancelling the show.

I was about six years old during the TOS run on prime time, so I don't remember that phrase. The first time I was familiar with the term Grok was after I read Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land, when I was in high school in the late '70's.
Had I read the novel in the late '60's during the time of the TOS, I would have completely associated with the term "I Grok Spock."
