I really like the "nebula effect" too! Gives an effective sense of "deep space."
The modular setting is working out well. It offers plenty of space for multiple figure scenes.

I recently cobbled together a couple of different settings for photos using the same salvaged-from-a-trash-bin components:
Pretty much everything here other than the lights and the figures is rubbish. The spray paint cost more than all the other components combined.
As a "display," these sets look like what they are: junk. But with selective camera angles and a little bit of "artistic" lighting they are adequate for photography purposes.

The dome? The round opening is a bit of foam packing material that has a round hole in it, backed by a broken plastic piece of a diffuser from a neon light fixture.
The arch part is a piece of curved foam packing material backed with plastic mesh cut from the bottom of one of those trays plants some times come in. Greenhouse nursery trays, I guess you’d call them. A contact on Flickr uses those to make cool stained glass windows. I want to try that some time.

It's been a while since I tackled a "junk" project, so here we go:
Pizza box, paper towel tubes, hot melt glue, a little bit of left-over spray paint and a string of holiday lights. Also useful: ruler, pen or pencil, scissors, and a pocket or craft knife.
Cardboard tube, like from Pringles Chips, with a broken bit of plastic I found on the ground glued in to it and a hole drilled in the opposite end to shine a light through.
Glue it all together, plug in the lights, and ya gots yer "Ninja Turtles" style sewer/dungeon/abandoned warehouse

I'm using a broken, leftover piece of insulation foam, about one inch thick, and roughly 18" by 24" (with a corner broken off), to try to make a brick "store front" backdrop.
I'm modeling my project after a recent build by forum member RealSarahdactyl:
