| Name ? John South
Online name ? action-johnny
Location ? King’s Lynn
First Vam/Joe/Mam or 1/6 figure ? Probably the 2nd Issue Soldier around 1971
What was your favourite figure as a kid, and do you still own him? Lifeguard with horse. Don’t own that actual one but did manage to get a complete vintage one with horse a few years back
Favourite figure now ? Ooh, that is a tough question! Probably my First Issue PH Talking Commander, pristine and talks really clear.
Most desired item ? I’d love an original Joe Talking Astronaut
What will you do with your collection as you get older ? Keep it! I never get rid of anything! I’m such a hoarder.
What does your wife/girlfriend/partner think of your collection/hobby? I sometimes get funny looks off her, especially if she hears me talking to them LOL! I remember once, she came home from work and caught me ironing some VAM clothes, she had a disgusted look on her face and sarcastically said “the only time you ever iron and it’s dolls clothes!”. She’s ok about it really, especially now they’ve been moved up to the loft. She has her collection of Pipa dolls so she can’t really say much!
Do you set yourself a budget ? Yes, never spend more than you can afford. I’d hate to get into debt over the little guys, I think it would cause some resentment towards them. I’ve basically stopped buying now anyway as I feel my collection has reached its max. Just looking for small bits to complete the odd sets.
Worst Vam/Joe/Mam or 1/6 figure ? A lot of the later MAM guys with skateboards etc. Vintage wise, probably that Intruder thingy.
Views on 40th reproductions ? It’s great, the uniforms are brilliant and it helps to complete some very hard sets. I don’t like the UK figures though, they are very poor quality. The US Joe figures are much better.
Worst item of the Vam/Joe/Mam or 1/6 range ? MAM with moulded on clothes.
Best thing about collecting Vam/Joe/Mam or 1/6 figures ? They conjure up so many happy childhood memories. They are definitely very therapeutic, if you are feeling a bit down get the guys out or just sit and view the collection.
Do you think your collection will be collectible in the future ? Yes, almost definitely.
If you did not collect Vam/Joe/Mam what would you collect ? Old records & 1960’s USA comic books
What AM/Joe outfit or set would you like to have seen released? A UK AM Combat Marine/1st camo Paratrooper in a box like the Joe one.
Do you have a/What is your favourite section of AMMO? Members collections
Why do you like AMMO ? Very, very friendly with some knowledgeable members willing to help

| Great interview mate I understand the point about ironing the Action man kit, The Missus does give me an ear full if I leave any stains on the iron and also the third degree on where I learnt how to use the device in the first place | |

| Fantastic interview John, me old mate. It made me smile! Yes we're all far to alike and have way too much in common! If we ever all went on that 'Wife swap' programme our other halves would take it in their stride as they are so used to us! _________________ Life moves pretty fast. | Ha, I am absolutely rubbish at ironing, I even struggled to do the AM bits I had to laugh the other week, I put an AM boiler suit in with the washing, when she pulled it out of the washing machine she said "what the hell is this?" To see it hanging over the radiator with her knickers was a joy to behold | |

| Great interview, John, nice to get to know you better. I never got rumbled using the iron, but I think my wife sometimes wonders why I wanted her old hair dryer and what I'm using it for in the basement, (mostly heating up boots and heads for removal) but she hasn't asked. Brian | |
