1970 also saw the very first Sailor issued and one of the first bearded figures along with the adventurer. Mine is wearing the HMS FEARLESS hat but there were also HMS ARK ROYAL, HMS DREADNOUGHT, HMS VICTORY, ( Though most of these names are thought to have been released on later issues of this figure.) There was also a very limited run of HMS BELFAST produced for a toy fair aboard the ship bearing the same name and it seems a few have made their way on land. They were NEVER sold onboard contrary to popular belief neither given away as prizes etc.... They are thought to have just been taken by some Toy Reps as they were for display ONLY. This conflict of story will probably run forever as with the even stranger tale of HMS RENOWN. This version has a much thicker material including the collar which later became paper.

Thats just it............. No one knows the story really. I know one person that has one and thats Roy (Actionmad) he says it was bought for him by his father and thats the hat he came with ?? I think it was bought from the gift shop on the HMS Renown but i caouldnt swear to that.

This is a great set of threads Dan! Cool

The info you've given in the 1973 Sailor thread confirms my dating for the HMS Dreadnought hat.

BOXED SAILOR 1970 Picture024-1

Hank came in the 1st UK style sailor box. I still have the rather tatty uniform. The tunic had a zip, the collar was material and the cap was 'Dreadnought'. I got him during the school summer holidays of 1972. I even remember I picked a Sailor because of the navy theme to the Dr Who episodes 'Sea Devils' which was broadcast in march 1972.

Im glad your enjoying them Steve and yes you would be correct as you are not the first person to tell me that the hat had a variation to its band Smile its great that things like this can be sorted out and talked about as this is how we really find out about things Smile

Here's my V40 Sailor...they really should include instructions for this tie... scratch

Thanks for the thread, Dan.

Dr Who! Maybe like Bond, First Doctor -- Favorite Doctor, Tom Baker here, but I have a fondness for Billy Hartnell, aka Sgt. Fletcher! Back in the 90's our local PBS station started rerunning all the Doctors from the very beginning. Really enjoyed seeing all of them(the first 7, at least). I always remember them watching the very Early Beatles on TV in the Tardis with the first Doctor...

A lovely boxed figure Dan.

It is interesting to read about the sailor hat bands, about the HMS Belfast, HMS Renown and all the others.

In the old Francis Baird book, which was produced quite some years ago, there is a Sailor in that wearing an HMS Raleigh cap band.
I never heard anyone talking much about it, but unless they were very clever, then that could be yet another cap band to put in the mix.

Is anyone aware of any showing up at any time?
Just curious.

Neil.
