Had a shot at fixing up this broken Ice pick I had lying about in my spares box, see could I get it to a serviceable state again.
I had a fully intact one from my Arctic Marine (right) that I used as a reference guide.
As you can easily see the tang had snapped off and the metal loop and rope were missing.
Very slowly and carefully drilled it out. I use a modeller's small suction vice for grip and stability whilst doing this.
Tiny bit of wire glued in as an armature to support the re-modelling.
Modelled it out with a bit of milliput.
Just before final shaping and sanding..
Got it to a reasonable shape.
Coat of primer and paint. The dagger beside it is a modded Lego sword, for my FRF.
Final Silver coat.
Not too shabby I hope?
Found an eyelet ring that I could use for a rope loop and some kosher rope that I had to unwind and wash it was THAT filthy. Obviously, it faded, hence the difference in colour betwixt it and the intact ice pick.
Happy enough with it though. This will go to my Mountaineer, currently a work in progress.

Thanks chaps. I just hate throwing anything Action Man out. Plus I do get a kick out of the challenge of rebuilding them.

Hi all. Just a quick little question someone might provide an answer to for me.
Am looking to repair this broken handled Deep Sea Diver's hammer with this bit of doweling which fits it rather well. Have the original bit drilled and pinned.
Before I finish it, what length is the original handle ? Would someone have a look and give me a correct measurement for the handle or the whole piece including the hammer head as I don't have an intact part. Yes, I know, I'm a bit OCD about these things but I'm a stickler for detail. Thanks in advance chaps !!!

Here's mine Kev. Hope this helps. You'll notice that it is tapered, being larger at the end.

Perfect Barry !! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that.
That's really exactly what I was after to scale it correctly.
Yes indeed there is a wider taper on the butt end. I may go with a different piece to accommodate that.
Thanks again mate !!

You're most welcome Kev! Always great to help out a fellow "stickler" for detail. I had to search forever to get my complete deep-sea diver.

Thanks to Barry's help, I was able to complete my little DSD hammer rebuild.
Drilled a small pin hole to take the pin I'd put in the damaged shaft.
Married the two glued pieces carefully together and when dry enough I gently sanded the new handle portion to shape.
Got a slight hint of the taper that widens out slightly at the end of the handle on the original.
Happy enough with that. Bit of varnish or paint to seal and finish it and my DSD should be happy.

You know, I do wonder how DSDs were able to swing those hammers underwater hard enough to be effective. It's quite hard to actually bash things with much force underwater, specially with such a long handle that only serves to increase the resistance on the hammer head.

Your comment piqued my curiosity, so I wasted some time looking for answers online. Apparently sledge hammers are a standard tool for salvage divers, so they must work, although it seems that divers usually use hammers with shorter handles. I found a discussion on a scuba diving forum that suggests that hammers generally work better underwater than one might intuitively expect:

I'm pretty sure a normal shorter handled normal hammer would be easier. You might be able to bash a large item with a sledge but aiming for a nail head to drive it in and not just bend it over would seem a bit hit-and-miss.

Hi folks, been a while. Hope everybody has been OK.
Here a recent re-flock I did. Well, by recent, I mean last year before I became pretty ill and all things AM took a back burner for a while.
I may touch up that superglue nose job I had to perform on him, but I think he turned out OK.
