Essentially the same photo as the preceding one, but so as to give more prominence to the coloured gels...also using different coloured gels than the previous photo. The idea of both was to try to recreate that very 1960's use of strong coloured lighting in ST: TOS and I think the second one....this one gets closer to the heart of the matter.

Colorful mood lighting and dramatic geometric lines - I find it interesting how "the future" is nearly always imagined in films as an enhanced version of the cutting edge styles of "the present." You rarely see a mid-1960s Trek-style version of The Future in films from the early 1950s or the 1980s. You rarely see the post-apocalypic "urban grunge" of Bladerunner or Alien in classic Star Trek.
Personally, I'll take the Forbidden Planet through Star Trek: Original Series versions of The Future over almost anything that comes later. Enhanced 1956-1966 sounds like a Future worth looking forward to.

Gene Roddenberry's original vision of the future as seen in ST: TOS was that of a bright future worth looking forward to. Humankind was united, the Federation had a "Prime Directive" that forbid interference in the normal development of other other worlds. Starlet was devoted primarily to peaceful space exploration; its military function coming in second or third in importance.
The idea clearly resonated with audiences and deviating from that, as did Star Trek: Enterprise when it eventually projected a long story line featuring a dystopian future and temporal cold war helped kill the series. Star Trek, the original Roddenberry version, was about optimism. any time a series strayed away from that, fans started to turn away.

When I grew up the prevailing mood was optimism....and it showed! I don't quite remember when it all changed but now the mood is most definitely one of deep pessimism.

Barry I think it was 1984 when General Mills pulled the plug on Action Man and the Palitoy design team!, But seriously I’d vote for 2008…..banking crisis…Afghanistan and Iraq ….Euro crisis mkV..change in political mood to populism… Everything got very “ grungy”..”otherisim” …in the UK whole brexit debate process got very febrile… Anyway hopefully better times are just around the corner
I also agree with all thoughts on the Gene Roddenberry/Star trek future and series…deffo a more hopeful future…

Given that the helmets worn by the Star Patrol are directly modeled off of Robbie the Robot's canopy and they exude exactly the same retro vibe, I would tend to agree.

It's fun. I wish I had an alien like that in my collection.
